The Biography of Virginia Cinque

Virginia Cinque, who hails from an artistic Anglo-Italian family believes what makes her work so unique is that long after the initial impact, the viewer continues to discover more.    “You see it, and then you are moved.    Each painting contains something that can’t be repeated.”

Virginia’s childhood environment was one of a very extraordinary passionate Italian culture.  She started painting at a very early age, and became influenced by the strong architectural shapes and the colourful light from the Mediterranean landscape.  Here she worked with an expression to colour, responding by painting images of her surroundings that She had an affinity with.

Lashing out the feelings of constriction that the Italian traditions and customs imposed,  she established a new found freedom of expression through a language of colour and composition, based on the passion of her Italian roots.

Virginia became a painter of places and travelled extensively throughout the world, Living life in one big romance  whilst Struggling to paint through the adversities that dominated her life,  finding  a sense of solitude whilst discovering that she not only loved painting, but people actually admired what she did!

She began to explore the works of Caravaggio and Rubens, becoming obsessed with the way in which both of them expressed their fixation of the figure compositionally and what powerful effects this played on the viewer emotions.

Her style changed dramatically, somehow seeming to consolidate her own feelings at the time.

Conflicting themes of expression became apparent to her and emerged through her work Using colour as a vehicle to evoke bigger and bolder paintings drawn from her past  finally  releasing the energies of materialized expression onto canvass.

Il Duomo Vettica  August 2001

“Painting is a very emotional experience that comes from highly focused concentration of inner thought.  Everything has to be just right everything has a part to play.   Colour and composition have the power to evoke particular feelings and states of mind and to stir sensual depths in people.”

Continuing with these themes her work evolved Once again Virginia began experimenting with different materials producing strong sculptured forms combining different artistic disciplines together.

Forces of Carravaggio    July, 2004

After graduating, Virginia looked for inspiration from abroad once again, sitting on the beach under parasols enjoying the warm sunshine under the protection of these huge forms.  She set out to capture this unique feeling of freedom and simplicity.   The distinctive brightly coloured umbrellas, which you either look over, under or through, each one representing a range of happiness, nostalgia, hope, emptiness, protection or freedom. The intense brushstrokes of the powerful images evoke a sense of solidity and provide a place of refuge whilst, at the same time, her work began to achieve her own   instantly recognizable style.
 Cavello   July. 2005

“All the wonderful breakthroughs I experienced in painting over the years have always left me with the same feeling of wanting to paint more.   Knowing that you are never satisfied with the last, leaves you with the intense motivation and challenge to go onto the next.”

Painting today, each painting is a reflection of my past, knowing it's the the unfulfilled dreams that keep you alive.

Over the last year Virginia has been working on her new collection of a series of Evocative figurative work entitled  "Life - a creation of the mind".
